Buying Plane Tickets for the First Time

Traveling on an airplane on your own for the first time? It can be a tough experience if you don’t know what to expect, and there are many mistakes beginners tend to make – but as long as you’re properly informed and prepared for the whole ordeal, you shouldn’t find it that difficult to get the best deal for yourself. The first thing you’ll likely notice are some high prices for most tickets – which often contrasts quite a bit with the ones advertised at the homepage of the airline’s website.

But don’t orient yourself by those prices listed right as you enter the website – those are typically the special deals which are only valid in some certain circumstances. In most cases, the cost of a plane ticket is going to be a bit high – but given the convenience of traveling by plane, that’s understandable. What you should keep in mind is that traveling by plane gives you plenty of room for customizing your experience – you can pick from a variety of options regarding your flight, and you certainly don’t always need all of them, especially the “extra” options related to comfort and utility.

This means that you should be careful when you’re configuring your plane ticket purchase, because many airlines – especially budget ones – tend to give you everything selected by default, leaving you with a very high price, much higher than you’d pay if you opted out of most of those features. For example, have a look at the options for traveling insurance – while it’s good to have that, it’s not mandatory in its extended form, so you don’t have to necessarily opt for that feature when configuring your plane tickets.

Likewise, remember that you aren’t going to need that extra leg room in most cases, and you certainly won’t need priority boarding (which, strangely enough, tends to be enabled by default with most airlines). If you’re new to the whole concept of flying by plane, priority boarding simply means that you’re let on the plane earlier than the other passengers around you, but do you really need that? After all, the plane takes off at the same time for everyone on board. Priority boarding is mostly only useful for people traveling in groups who want to make sure that they get seats next to each other, especially during longer flights – but you’ll likely not need to buy it otherwise.

Needless to say, you should shop ahead of time as much as possible – don’t leave this for the last minute, as that’s when the prices tend to go up very quickly. It’s not unusual to see the cost of a ticket double overnight as the seats on it are getting fewer and fewer, and it may reach a point where it’s simply not affordable for you to take that flight any more.
